Rostros de la alteridad en la narrativa medieval europea: monstruos, bestias y prodigios
La Edad Media ha sido uno de los períodos más prolíficos en cuanto a la creación y la representación de seres cuya singularidad pone en jaque, de modos muy diversos, la norma (o más precisamente, lo que suponemos era la norma para el hombre medieval). La arquitectura y las artes figurativas de la época no dejan de ponerlos ante nuestros ojos, ya insertos en los tímpanos de las catedrales, donde conviven con santos, héroes y estampas de la historia sagrada; ya asomando desde las iluminaciones, las marginalia o las grandes iniciales miniadas de los manuscritos, por nombrar solo dos de las evidencias materiales más conocidas. No menos frecuente es su presencia no solo en las páginas de bestiarios, historias naturales, crónicas, relatos de viajes y fabularios, sino también en los territorios de la ficción de las literaturas vernáculas.
Por otra parte, se ha planteado con frecuencia que las narrativas medievales carecían de personajes con una subjetividad e interioridad desarrolladas y visibles; también se ha observado, matizando y relativizando esa afirmación tan contundente, que la subjetividad podía permanecer oculta y solo lograba mostrarse a través de ciertos mecanismos. Uno de ellos es, justamente, la introducción de un Otro (animal o ser extraordinario) indispensable para encarnar esa interioridad que aún no se ha revelado completamente.
En función de estas consideraciones generales, el proyecto se propone estudiar la relevancia de la intervención, en un corpus de textos en lenguas vernáculas de los siglos XII a XV, de seres que materializan de diversos modos el contacto con la alteridad y evaluar su posible función como herramienta para configurar la identidad del héroe o la heroína. Asimismo, consideramos necesario construir una categoría más amplia que las habituales, que permita incluir no solo monstruos o seres fantásticos sino todos aquellos seres que expresan la diferencia, la a-normalidad, para la episteme medieval.
Faces of otherness in medieval European narrative: monsters, beasts and prodigies
The Middle Ages has been one of the most prolific periods in terms of the creation and representation of beings whose singularity, in many ways, challenges the norm –more precisely, what we assume was the norm for medieval man.These creatures are constantly displayed before our eyes by the architecture and figurative arts of the period, sometimes in cathedral tympana, where they stand alongside saints, heroes, and scenes from sacred history; sometimes in manuscripts, peeking out from illuminations, marginalia or large illuminated initials, to name just two of the most widely known material evidences. They are not less frequently featured not only in the pages of bestiaries, natural histories, chronicles, travel narratives, and fables collections, but also in the fictional territories of vernacular literatures.
It has often been argued that medieval narratives lack characters with fully-developed subjectivity and inner life. However, this forceful observation has also been nuanced and qualified by noting that subjectivity could remain hidden and would only become apparent through certain mechanisms. Among them is the introduction of an Other (an animal or extraordinary being) which proves indispensable in embodying that innerself that has not yet been fully revealed.
Based on these general considerations, the project will focus on a corpus of texts in vernacular languages from the twelfth to fifteenth centuries, with the purpose of examining the relevance of these creatures as embodiments of the contact with Otherness and their possible function as a tool for shaping the identity of the hero or heroine. Furthermore, we believe a broader category than those usually used should be constructed, one that would allow for the inclusion not only of monsters or fantastic creatures but also of all those beings expressing difference, a-normality, according to the medieval episteme.
